Kids Organic Popsicles

02.5.15

Popsicles are a delicious treat to indulge in, especially during the warm spring and summer months. Unfortunately, most popsicles contain several harsh additives and artificial flavors, like Red 40 and aspartame. The only way to avoid these dangerous chemicals is to purchase organic popsicle brands, or make your own. Buying organic popsicles can be pricey, ranging from $5.00-$10.00 per pack, and most still contain an alarming amount of sugar. I have found a simple way to create fresh organic popsicles.  Creating my own treats allows me to monitor the amount of sugar that I consume, and it also tastes fresher.  Here is my simple and affordable recipe for strawberry and blackberry flavored popsicles.

You will need the following ingredients and supplies (makes 5-8 popsicles):Agave Nectar

  • One Pack of Organic Strawberries (16 oz.)
  • One Pack of Organic Blackberries (6 oz.)
  • Organic Agave Nectar (2 tbsp.)
  • Water (1/4 cup)
  • Organic Lemon Juice (Not from Concentrate, 2 tbsp.)
  • Popsicle Molds
  • Blender

For those of you that have never heard of agave nectar, it is a natural low-glycemic sweetener that can be used in replacement of sugar. Its low-glycemic value means that it will not severely impact our blood sugar. Agave nectar has several health benefits, which include boosting our immune system and lowering cholesterol.

Blended Ingredients

When preparing the popsicles, first wash the strawberries and blackberries, and slice the tops off the strawberries. Put the fruit in a blender, and add two tablespoons of agave nectar, and two tablespoons of organic lemon juice. Next, add 1/4 cup of water and blend all of the ingredients together.

The resulting liquid base can then be poured into the popsicle molds, and left in the freezer.  I usually leave mine for 6 hours, to prevent breakage.  When ready, you will be left with a delicious treat.  Enjoy!
